Suttons Bay Public School is looking for a certified counselor/social worker who is a student-centered problem solver with a strong desire to create a positive and joyful learning environment for our students. Candidates must have experience in establishing meaningful relationships with elementary-aged children and be able to develop a positive rapport with their students, parents, and other staff members. Our Counselor/Social Worker needs to be trained in child and adolescent development, self-management, and social skills. They will implement a school counseling program to support students through this important developmental period by providing information and recommendations to students and their families and assisting in the development of goals and plans for student success. Our ideal candidates are also fiercely resilient and can find creative and innovative ways to motivate students to engage with the school community. 


Certification Requirements:

A Michigan Licensed Master’s Level Professional Counselor or a licensed master’s level social worker or A MDE Credentialed Master’s Level School Psychologist.


Qualifications and Job Responsibilities:

  • Experience with adolescent mental health supports.
  • Provide short-term individual and small-group counseling services to students.
  • Maintain records to document interactions, interventions, and decisions. 
  • Refer students and their parents to community agencies, programs, or specialists as appropriate. 
  • Oversee student health plans and 504 plans.
  • Be in charge of district Medicaid billing and working under a signed medical order from an MD.
  • Participate in the evaluation and revision of the school guidance program. 
  • Create and maintain a PBIS system (or a similar model) to support the school community. 
  • Partner with the teachers and principal to provide behavioral intervention and support. 
  • Complete Activity Logs that are compliant with Federal Guidelines. 
  • Work with a team to develop a district-wide system to assist students in developing future career plans. 
  • Work with SE staff to support students Individualized Educational Development Plans.
  • Advocate for students at individual education plan meetings, student study teams and school attendance review boards, as necessary.
  • Provide grade level transition activities. 

Fulfill the following professional responsibilities: 

  • Maintain confidentiality 
  • Maintain records consistent with ethical and legal guidelines 
  • Participate on the school-based behavior response team 
  • Perform responsibilities in an organized, accurate, timely, and dependable manner 
  • Operate within the established district and school procedures and policies 
  • Attend district in-services and meetings 
  • Keep informed of current professional trends 
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain a positive climate for students 
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff 
  • Work in partnership with other counselors at SBPS
  • Participate in building and district committees 
  • Perform “Essential Job Functions” as specified
  • Other duties as assigned by administration 

Terms of Employment

Full-time salary and health benefits provided per the SBEA Contract. *Please note that the district is currently in contract negotiations our SBEA and hopes to have a ratified contract later this spring which will include updates to Schedule A and B.
